Traffic backup on I26 Eastbound

SCDOT

— A 24-year-old resident of Irmo was killed Wednesday afternoon when her 1997 Ford Explorer ran off the road and overturned several times on Interstate 26 near the Irmo exit.

The accident happened around 3:45 p.m. on the eastbound side of the busy interstate. After her SUV ran off the right side of the road, the driver over-corrected sending her vehicle back onto the road and off the left side where it overturned several times, Lance Cpl David Jones of the highway patrol said.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts identified the woman on Thursday morning

The driver, who has not been publicly identified, was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle. She was taken to Palmetto Richland Memorial hospital where she died.

The accident is being investigated by the SC Highway Patrol and Richland County Coroner’s office.

One lane eastbound I-26 was blocked for a couple of hours Wednesday afternoon resulting in a significant backup of traffic during Columbia’s afternoon rush hour.
