Gov. Nikki Haley

MARY ANN CHASTAIN — AP

— Gov. Nikki Haley and her legislative cohorts take great pride in refusing federal dollars that would benefit the most vulnerable of our citizens — our children, the poor, ill and disabled. Knowing that the money is dispersed among other states causes them no concern.

Their election campaigns are focused on keeping Washington out of our business and out of our state. Yet federal dollars for deepening the port of Charleston are eagerly accepted, even solicited. Where is the logic in that?

In truth, it is not about logic at all. It is about priorities —priorities that value possible economic advantage over moral responsibility.
