Thursday letters: Baseball park a bad investment

— Congratulations to Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin and council members Cameron Runyan and Brian DeQuincey Newman for once again sticking their heads in the sand and refusing to actually study the benefits a of minor league baseball stadium relative to its costs as well as publicly financed development.

All one has to do is research the studies that have been published on this issue. At best, the benefit of a minor league stadium on local economies is zero, and at worst it is negative. There is a reason they do not want this study done. It would show everyone how foolish and irresponsible it is to publicly finance a minor league stadium.

Instead of showing the residents of Columbia hard numbers, they would rather go into it blind, while diverting water and sewer dollars from their much-needed purpose — water and sewer projects.
