WEST COLUMBIA, SC — A joint task force raided the Metro Flea Market on U.S. 1 (Augusta Road) in West Columbia and confiscated $237,000 worth of fake goods, S.C. Secretary of State Mark Hammond said in a news release Thursday.
Six people were charged with the illegal distribution of counterfeit goods after the raid by agents from the S.C. Secretary of State’s office, Lexington County Sheriff’s Department and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Charged were Veronica Valdes-Guerra and Jamiel Jones of South Congaree; Darnell William Curry and Daniel Eugene Curry of Augusta, Ga.; Hassan Yaguob Elzein of Cayce; and Rick Fernando Vanburn of Sumter.
Both Elzein and Jones are repeat offenders in Lexington County, Hammond said.
Goods seized included handbags, hats, clothing, shoes, jewelry, wallets, belts, sunglasses and headphones carrying designer labels such as Adidas, Burberry, Chanel, Coach, Gucci, Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Nike, Tory Burch, Michael Kors, Beats by Dr. Dre, Polo, Prada, Versace, National Football League, National Hockey League, National Basketball Association, Major League Baseball, Motion Picture Association of America and Recording Industry of America.
If convicted, those charged could face $20,000 in fines and/or five years in prison.
