SCE&G to test alarms at VC Summer nuclear plant Tuesday

From staff reportsJuly 1, 2014

Residents around V.C. Summer Nuclear Station in Fairfield County will hear siren warnings around 1 p.m. Tuesday. The nuclear station is testing its warning system, operator S.C. Electric & Gas said.

The Cayce-based utility will sound the sirens within a 10-mile radius of the nuclear plant near Jankinsville as part of its regular testing program, the utility said in a release. SCE&G once a year sounds all sirens surrounding the plant for three minutes. Each quarter, the utility sounds the alarms for less than a minute.

In the event of an actual emergency, the utility would sound the sirens with no prior notice and would send out alerts over the Emergency Alert System.
