“Where’s Waldo?” This month, he’s in Camden. But it’s still up to you to find him.

The elusive book character, in his red-and-white striped shirt, knit hat and black-rimmed glasses, is hiding in 25 businesses in downtown Camden throughout the month of July. Find all of them – plus his dog, Woof – to earn bookstore coupons and be eligible for grand prizes.

“At the heart of this is the Shop Local movement,” said Laurie Funderburk, owner of Books on Broad, the local bookstore sponsoring the project in Camden. “A downtown is critical to any community.”

The “Where’s Waldo?” contest is a project developed by the American Booksellers Association and Candlewick Press, the publisher of the famous “Waldo” seek-and-find books. Each year, they select 250 local booksellers to participate in the project. Books on Broad participated last year, shortly after opening its doors. This year, the bookstore was placed on the wait list – until Funderburk called on the same day another bookstore had to back out of the project.

There are 24 other local businesses that agreed to let Waldo hide among their aisles and shelves, including a restaurant and a bakery. All 25 businesses are within a 21/2-block area, Funderburk said.

“Last year, people would break it up, but we did have some people who did it all in a day,” she said.

“This is a great way to have something fun going on and getting families out in the community.”

Waldo seekers get a stamp each time they find him. When they collect 10 stamps, they receive a souvenir button and a $1 off coupon from Books on Broad. With 20 stamps, their names are entered into a drawing for several grand prizes, including a $100 prepaid credit card, a deluxe set of “Where’s Waldo?” books and other Waldo-themed items, and prizes from the participating businesses.

The grand prize drawings will be held during the ending celebration on July 31, from 4-5 p.m. at the bookstore.

Waldo seekers can pick up a passport at Books on Broad (944 Broad St. Camden), which lists the 25 participating locations. After finding Waldo and receiving stamps at each business, return the passport to the bookstore for prizes.
