Rogers wins under the lights

July 10, 2014

WHO KNOWS what fun lurks behind the candlelights at Saluda Shoals Park!?

Although it has not yet been measured and certified as compliant with USATF standards, Columbia’s inaugural Rock Pink 5K on May 10 had 340 finishers.

Elgin’s Rob Rogers, 19, led the field at 21:43, two seconds ahead of Summerton’s Nicholas Brooking, 25. Lexington’s Kinn Elliott, 45, was third overall in 22:02 and was the first Masters finisher.

Lindsay Nimmo, 35, West Columbia, was the first female, seventh overall, in 24:14. Lexington’s Morgan Gavin, 14, was the second female and eight overall. Irmo’s Leanna Mentes was 14th overall and the third female finisher in 25:36. Her sister, Jacqueline, 12, was 15th overall in 25:39.

The 11th Annual Paris Mountain 12K Trail Run offers a special challenge in addition to the steep climb to the top — it is summer in the South. Newcomer runners must learn to respect the adjustments that Southern-style “heat” requires.

A total of 136 runners attacked the mountain in Greenville on May 31. One of those already adequately adjusted was Greenville’s James Brooks, 20, who finished first overall in 52:03.

Peter Ross, 34, Moore, was second in 58:35. Joe Vanleeuwen, 25, finished in 59:25.

Greenville’s Byron Backer, 49, was the first Master’s finisher and sixth overall in one hour. Backer is a veteran of the Grandfather Mountain Marathon.

Greenville’s Lynn Honnette, 31, was the first female and seventh overall in 1:01. Thirty-eight of the finishers were female.

Acclimating to both heat and hills in the summer, it has been said, can lead to cool weather breakthroughs in personal best times at selected distances.
