SAN FRANCISCO - On the day Marco Scutaro finally returned to the batter's box, the Giants lineup did something they hasn't done since the veteran was only a year old. Unfortunately, it was far from a positive accomplishment.
The Giants lost 2-0 to the Arizona Diamondbacks and in the process failed to give Ryan Vogelsong any runs of support for the fourth consecutive start. Vogelsong is the first Giant since Lynn McGlothen in 1977 to get zero runs of support over four straight starts in the same season. He has a 2.92 ERA over the stretch and is 0-4.
Vogelsong gave up just six hits and two earned runs in 6 ?1/3 innings, walking none and striking out four. The start continued a strong, yet unrewarding stretch for the veteran right-hander. He gave up one run over six innings June 26 and took a 3-1 loss to the Reds. The Giants fell 2-0 to the Cardinals on July 2, with Vogelsong taking the loss after giving up two runs over seven innings. He gave up three runs over 5 ?1/3 on July 7, taking the loss in a 5-0 game.
The Giants' best chance to get to Diamondbacks starter Wade Miley came after Vogelsong's day was done. They put two on with one out in the seventh, but Gregor Blanco grounded out and pinch hitter Hector Sanchez lined out to first.
Scutaro made his first appearance for the Giants since Sept. 15.
