Out-of-town teenager killed while visiting family near Prosperity

— A 13-year-old Rhode Island boy visiting family near Prosperity was killed Wednesday night when the ATV he was driving ran off a gravel road, down an embankment and overturned.

Michael Austin of South Kingstown, Rhode Island, had arrived in the area earlier in the day. He was not wearing a helmet or seat belt at the time of the accident and suffered extensive head injuries, Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton said. Another boy riding the ATV with Austin was not injured.

An autopsy will be performed this morning to determine the exact cause of death, Newton said.

The accident, which occurred around 8:40 pm near 4900 Old Jollystreet Road near Prosperity, remains under investigation by the coroner’s office, Newberry County Sheriff’s Department and SC Highway Patrol.
