Junior tailback Brian Maddox, the forgotten man in the Gamecocks' backfield of late, will get the start Saturday vs. No. 1 Florida, USC coach Steve Spurrier said following Thursday's practice.
It will be Maddox's first start since the Mississippi game Sept. 24. Redshirt freshman Kenny Miles, the Gamecocks' leading rusher, has started the past six games.
Spurrier said he wanted a bigger back to handle the Gators' blitzing linebackers.
Defensively, the Gamecocks are hoping to injured defensive end Cliff Matthews will play against the Gators. Matthews has been wearing a protective brace on his left shoulder, which he dislocated at Tennessee two weeks ago.
Matthews, who missed last week's loss to Arkansas, will be a game-time decision, assistant head coach for defense Ellis Johnson said.
In other news, senior defensive back Darian Stewart will return to strong safety after playing spur the past two games. Antonio Allen is expected to start at spur.
