Bowl week schedule, facts, more

Today’s schedule

10 a.m. — Iowa players visit St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital

11:30 a.m. — USC practice at Jefferson High School

2:15 p.m. — USC players visit St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital

7:30 p.m. — Both teams attend NHL game, Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Florida Panthers

What to know about Iowa

There is no bird called a hawkeye. The Iowa nickname comes from a character named Hawkeye in the James Fenimore Cooper novel of 1862 “The Last of the Mohicans.” People in Iowa began calling themselves Hawkeyes in the late 1800s and the school later adopted the nickname for its teams.

Fantasy football, USC style

Had the current bowl system existed, USC surely would have played in more than 13 bowl games over the years. Take 1903, for example. Captain Guy Gunter and his USC team under the coaching of C.R. Williams went 8-2 yet stayed home for the holidays.

Of course, USC was not alone in being snubbed by the bowls. There were no bowl games following the 1903 season. That USC team defeated Welsh Neck, 89-0, and rolled over Tennessee, 24-0, and Georgia Tech, 16-0.

USC was one of 19 teams that season to win eight or more games. Under today’s setup, USC no doubt would have earned an Outback Bowl bid against Iowa (9-2).

Observance of the day

No trip to Tampa is complete without a stop at J&J Bar B-Que & Soul Food, a roadside shack just off I-75 outside Ocala.

In case barbecue is not to your liking, there always is the $6 goat sandwich.

It’s the Outback Bowl, mate

Stay with me on this one. Outback restaurants are somehow connected with the Outback country of Australia. Nicole Kidman, perhaps the greatest actress of all time, recently starred in the movie “Australia,” a love story filmed in her native country.

It stands to reason that Kidman should be in Tampa this week to celebrate the playing of the Outback Bowl on New Year’s Day. Unfortunately, despite looking everywhere in the Tampa Bay area, there were no Kidman sightings on Friday.

Stay tuned.

Outback Bowl history

USC holds a few Outback Bowl records, the most notable being Ryan Brewer’s 12.2 yards per carry in the 2002 game against Ohio State and Tyeler Dean’s 70-yard punt in the 2002 game against Ohio State.

Deandre Eiland is among five players who have two interceptions in one Outback Bowl game. His two came in the 2001 game.

Also, USC shares the Outback Bowl record with 51 rushing attempts in the 2001 game. Syracuse had the same number against LSU in 1989.
