Mayor Bob Coble today called for a retail strategy to make downtown a magnet for regional shoppers and more inviting for visitors.

Coble, speaking to the Columbia Rotary Club, called for an overall retail strategy for areas such as the Vista, USC’s research campus, Main Street and the new Bull Street neighborhood.

The goal would be to cluster related shops and services in certain areas — such as Main Street being a destination for apparel.

The plan would include finding ways to connect the various downtown areas, hiring recruiters and providing better parking.
