Sumter and Lee County authorities have arrested a man they believe scammed residents while posing as a representative of the Sumter Fire Department to solicit food and donations.

Len Edward Burroughs, also known as Len Edward Norman, 41, of Sumter Highway in Lee County was arrested Tuesday. He is charged with property crime-third or subsequent offense and forgery.

Detectives of the Sumter Police Department were able to identify Burrows based on descriptions given. Burrows had been arrested previously on charges of obtaining property under false pretenses.

In that case, police say a man using the name Len Norman solicited donations from area businesses under false pretenses. The investigation is continuing.

Anyone with additional information or who may have been a victim is asked to call crimestoppers at (803) 436-2718 or the Sumter City Police Department’s Detective Division at (803) 436-2717 or 436-2700.
