“I could have stayed all night,” Esther Sanders said about her trip to the South Carolina State Fair, where she danced with fair-goer Annette Chisholm to the music of Carl Brunson, the One Man Band.

“I was waiting for him to play ‘Your Cheatin’ Heart,’” Sanders said, but it was “Twist and Shout” that got her moving.

Sanders attended the fair on Exceptional Citizen’s Day with fellow clients from Columbia Adult Care, an adult day care in Columbia’s Shandon neighborhood.

“It’s a special thing, and they look forward to it all year,” center director Tammy Quarles said.

The first stop for the group, all pushed in wheelchairs by volunteers and program assistants, is always the Cantey Building to look at the art they make during daily craft time. The clients have submitted art projects for the show for about 10 years, winning a second place in their division last year.

“Making the art and seeing it in the show gives them a sense of accomplishment,” Quarles said.
