Police, Richland 1 team up or literacy

Columbia police are teaming up with Richland 1 on the school district's literacy initiative: L.E.A.D.S. (Literacy Excellence Achieves Desired Success) with "Readers Are Leaders So Book 'em Now."

The program will collect new and gently used books for Richland 1 students for home libraries.

"Readers Are Leaders So Book 'em Now" will have its first kickoff event from 5-7 tonight during the Earlewood Community's Halloween event at McCants Townhomes, 3501 Lyles St. During the party, kids can play games, trick-or-treat and receive a book.

Adults can donate books to "Readers Are Leaders So Book'em Now" at the event and at other Columbia locations listed at www.columbiapd.com.
