Blooming Butterflies return to EdVenture

Go Columbia for June 8: Butterflies, by the numbers

The butterflies are back!

Blooming Butterflies, an outdoor showcase of butterflies, has returned to EdVenture Children’s Museum through Oct. 5. Here is your guide to butterflies, by the numbers:

2,500 Number of square feet in the enclosed butterfly habitat at EdVenture.

20 Number of butterfly species native to the Southeast that you’ll find in the exhibit.

2 Number of stages of metamorphosis you’ll be able to spot. Butterflies are one of the few order of animals that go through complete metamorphosis.

10 Multiply the weight of a raindrop by 10 and you’ll know how much a butterfly weighs.

2 Rules to remember. 1. Don’t touch the butterflies. Even a slight tough from a finger can damage their wings. 2. Keep your eyes open because the species of butterflies in the exhibit is continually changing, just as the butterflies themselves change. Some are still chrysalises, while others are emerging butterflies.

Entry to Blooming Butterflies is included with museum admission ($8.50-$11.50. Members and children under 1 are free). Monday through Saturday, first entry to the exhibit is at 9:30 a.m. and last entry is at 4:30 p.m. On Sundays, first entry is at 12:30 p.m. and last entry is at 4:30 p.m. EdVenture is at 211 Gervais St. www.edventure.org
