Lake Murray is the place this weekend for great wakeboarding watching

Go Columbia for June 13: Wakeboarding Weekend at Lake Murray

Admit it: it’s hard not to stop and watch when the trick wakeboarders are doing their crazy flips, turns and Superman-like “raleys” on television or on Lake Murray. Now’s your chance to give it a try. Really.

On Friday, June 13 and Saturday, June 14 the SC Rough Riders will host the annual Wakeboarding Weekend with the Pros. The two-day event will feature an in-water boat show, wakeboard demos, wakeboard lessons, ride-alongs and, on Saturday, a pro wakeboard show featuring four-time World Champion Shaun Murray, MasterCraft team member Josh Palma and Amber Wing, the first female wakeboarder to land a double flip. We asked Wing and event organizer Chris Farr for a few tips for first-timers.

• Don’t be scared. “You wear a flotation device, so even if you’re not a strong swimmer, you’ll do fine,” says Wing.

• You can do it! “You’ll be on equipment fitted to you and taught by some of the world’s best riders and coaches,” says Farr. “You’ll amaze yourself – most of our first-timers can do tricks by the end of their lesson.”

• Getting up is a lot like waterskiing. “Just keep your arms straight, your knees bent and let the boat do the work,” explains Wing.

The boat show, lessons and wakeboard demos will run from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday in Paradise Cove on Lake Murray. The Pro Show is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Rocky Creek.

Although the show is free for boaters – there’s not a good vantage point from land – a limited number of tickets will be sold to join the pro riders on their boats. For lesson and ticket price information and registration; maps and directions, visit scroughriders.com
