Head to Rhythm on the River tonight

Go Columbia for June 14: Danielle Howle + Firework Show performs at the Riverwalk Amphitheater

When Danielle Howle performs Saturday, June 14, at the Riverwalk Amphitheater, it will be the last Rhythm on the River concert of the season, and your last chance to hear great music in this unique setting until the fall series begins. Never been? Here are six things that will make your evening a whole lot better.

1. A blanket and chairs. Although there are seats in the amphitheater, somehow, live concerts just seem to sound better when you’re sitting on an old quilt.

2. A cooler. There will be limited food for sale at the concert, but why not pack a big picnic and have dinner under the stars?

3. Cash and your ID. While you can bring outside food into the park, you can’t bring alcoholic beverages. Not to fear: beer and wine will be for sale. After the concert, it’s a quick walk to the restaurants and cafes along State Street for a nightcap or dessert.

4. A bathing suit and your favorite flotation device. Cool off before or during the concert in the Congaree River, which flows along the edge of the park. Or finish up a day of kayaking with dinner and music.

5. Walking shoes, a dog leash and a water bowl. The Amphitheater is located along West Columbia’s Riverwalk, a paved trail that meanders along the riverbank. Take Fido for a stroll, then settle in for the concert: leashed, friendly dogs are welcome in the park.

6. A camera. The sunset views across the river to the Columbia skyline are magical.

Rhythm on the River runs 6-9 p.m. at the Riverwalk Amphitheater, 102 Alexander Road, West Columbia. The event is free. Rain location is Jillian’s, 800 Gervais St., Columbia. For more information, visit rhythmontheriversc.com
