Just how good is sweet dough—or batter—that’s deep fried until puffed and crispy, then topped or filled with any number of calorie-enhancing extras? So good that nearly every culture has some delicious, addictive form of the stuff.
You’re probably familiar with churros, the cinnamon and sugar-sprinkled fried dough from Mexico, and with beignets, the go-to coffee accompaniment in New Orleans.
But there are others, such as Russia’s branch-like khvorost, Turkey’s syrup-soaked tulumba and India and Pakistan’s saffron-infused jalebi.
Here in South Carolina, we fry up most of our dough into doughnuts…at least until the State Fair comes to town. For that 10-or-so-days, we can indulge in funnel cakes, a seasonal delight that amps up the ratio of crunchy outside to pillowy inside, thus ensuring a perfect bite every time.

Can’t wait for the State Fair? Consider a trip to Cromer’s. That’s because Friday, July 11 has been designated “Funnel Cake Friday.” From 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., staff members will be in the parking lot turning out fresh-from-the-fryer funnel cakes and selling them for $5 each.
“They’ll go straight from the fryer to the plate, so you’ll get them hot and fresh,” says Agata Chydzinski, who will be braving the heat to turn out the golden disks. “You can have them plain or topped with powdered sugar, cinnamon and sugar or chocolate sauce. Or all three.”
To round out your meal, Cromer’s will also be selling foot-long corn dogs, freshly squeezed lemonade and snow cones, all of which can be enjoyed outside or in the shop’s air-conditioned café.
