Tribute to hometown film director begins this week

A 90th birthday salute to Stanley Donen, the film director who grew up in Columbia’s Hollywood-Rose Hill neighborhood, begins Saturday with a walking tour of his childhood neighborhood of Hollywood-Rose Hill. Meet at Hollywood Park, 300 S. Gregg St., for Historic Columbia 6 and 6:30 p.m. guided walking tours through the neighborhood; $8, youth, $5; age 5 and younger, Historic Columbia and Nickelodeon members, free. At 7 p.m., enjoy a picnic and DJ in Hollywood Park followed by an 8 p.m. screening of Donen’s classic “Singin’ in the Rain.” Free admission. For the next five weeks, showings of other classic Donen films – including “On the Town,” “Charade” and “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” – will be shown at the Nickelodeon, 1608 Main St. Details: http://nickelodeon.org

Brett Favre at the Township

The 2014 Football kickoff celebration with former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre is at 7 p.m. Thursday at Township Auditorium, 1703 Taylor St. Balcony seats are $50 and orchestra seats are $60. Proceeds will benefit The Calhoun Trauma Brain Injury Foundation. The evening will open with a silent auction at 5:30 p.m. and music from The One Man Band and Elliott & the Untouchables. Doko Rodeo

The town of Blythewood’s annual Doko Rodeo is Friday and Saturday at Blythewood Community Center Park on Community Road. International Professional Rodeo starts at 8 p.m. with competition in eight rodeo events. You can test your skills by riding a mechanical bull. Food vendors and children’s activities.
