In honor of SC Aviation Week, you can get a behind-the-scenes view of Columbia Metropolitan Airport.

The tour is designed as if it is a pretend trip, said Giulia Dempsey, administrative specialist for the airport. The destination is selected based on the ages represented in the group. The tours are appropriate for children in first grade or above, as well as adults.

The tour begins in the parking garage, where passengers arrive. The group then moves to the ticket counters to learn about the check-in process and how luggage gets checked. The tour continues with a trip through the security checkpoint.

The group then gets an up-close look at the work done by the Fire Department, control tower and weather station. Finally, the group watches airplanes take off and land.

The tours last about 45 minutes, beginning at 10:30 a.m., and are offered Monday through Thursday mornings throughout the year. There is no charge, but you must make a reservation by calling (803) 822-5146.
