Wofford College graduate Ben Ingram’s knowledge of state holidays got him through to the semi-finals of TV game show Jeopardy’s Tournament of Champions.
Ingram, 32, knew that former Secretary of State William Seward has his own state holiday in Alaska and won $16,801 to advance in the tournament. Ingram will appear on the show again next week during the semi-finals.
Last year, Ingram’s total winnings during an eight-game streak, tied for 7th best all time, totaled $177,534. His run came to an end on July 11, 2013.
Ingram majored in mathematics at Wofford, received a master’s degree in applied mathematics at the University of South Carolina and works for a large bank in Charlotte.
Before the first commercial break Monday night, Ingram lost everything in a Daily Double wager. He came back during the Double Jeopardy round and was leading with $16,100 going into Final Jeopardy, when contestants make their final wagers.
Categories during Monday night’s episode included fashion, space, books made into movies and Twitter feeds.
The tournament continues this week at 7:30 p.m. on WLOS.
