Upstate shortstop excited about USC commitment

Riverside High rising senior shortstop Wil Leathers committed to join the South Carolina baseball program, his first offer.

Leathers has been pondering this decision since he first hit the diamond at four years old.

"It felt awesome," Leathers said of his decision. "It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, and it’s always been a main goal of mine. It finally came true. I’ve always wanted to play there, but I didn’t really hear anything from them until recently. They offered me, so it was an easy decision to make."

Leathers has been a member of the Riverside varsity team since his freshman year. He has started the past two seasons in the middle-infield.

Leathers is now playing on the summer circuit with the 17U Carolina Cyclones. Since he has reached his primary goal of securing a future in baseball, and in education, Leathers said his focus, as he enters his final high school season, is to improve in every statistical category.

“I just love it. I love playing the game," he said. "I just have to keep working hard. It will never be easy. You’ve always got to set your goals high. You always have to do things to get better. I just want to progress each year."
