For longtime USC radio play-by-play man Bob Fulton, South Carolina's 1969 ACC championship season was, for years, just a slowly receding memory.
Then, while attending a recent gathering in USC's "The Zone" at Williams-Brice Stadium, the 85-year-old broadcaster was presented with a gift from the past.
"A woman came up to me and said, 'Maybe you'd like to have this," Fulton said. And she handed him a CD, "Total Excitement 1969," a collection of highlights from Fulton's play-by-play of each of the Gamecocks' 1969 games.
Fulton was eager to listen to see if the disk's quality was still good - but his CD player was not working. The good news: The quality is good-to-excellent, and the highlights, with lead-ins by longtime USC football producer Homer Fesperman, are a treasure for longtime USC and Fulton fans.
So when better to reproduce the CD than this, the 40th anniversary of that championship season? Fulton is considering doing so; for information on copies of the CD, call him at (803) 331-6611.
"I've got stuff all over (his apartment), and I've been sending some to the (USC) archives," Fulton said. "But the tapes ... no one can use my voice."
Fans can still enjoy it, though. Even 40 years later.
