South Carolina will get a longer look at its backup tailbacks.
Starting tailback Mike Davis, a senior from Columbia, left Thursday’s practice with an injured left shoulder and could be out a week or so, according to Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier.
“Mike Davis fell on the ground in a drill over here. Nobody touched him,” Spurrier said. “And he said he hurt his shoulder a little bit. So he missed the entire practice.”
Davis has rushed for 1,658 career yards and 16 touchdowns but shared carries the past two seasons with Cory Boyd.
With Davis out, sophomore Brian Maddox will get the bulk of the first-team reps, followed by redshirt junior Taylor Rank and freshman Eric Baker.
Stock rising
Walk-on cornerback Mike Newton shut down his side of the field, applying tight coverage during a brief scrimmage that featured mostly young players. Newton, a senior from Lexington, drew an offensive pass interference penalty on a long pass from Stephen Garcia.
Stock falling
The Gamecocks’ young receivers and tight ends had a tough time getting open and hanging on to the ball. The longest catch came on a hitch route to Joe Hills, who turned the short pass into a nice gain. Other than that, there were few passing-game highlights.
Injury report
Walk-on FB Jim Hutton will undergo season-ending surgery on his right knee. S Mark Barnes (hamstring) sat out Thursday, while WR Matt Clements (hamstring), LB Reggie Bowens (shoulder), DT Ladi Ajiboye (hand), TE Jared Cook (toe) and S Jay Spearman (shoulder) remain sidelined.
Quote of the day
“About what you’d expect. He’s all over the place. Protection wasn’t very good and not many guys open, so he ran around quite a bit.” — Spurrier on Garcia, who was 3-of-13 passing in the scrimmage but had a couple of nice scrambles.
Up next
Thursday was the last practice open to the public. The Gamecocks will have a closed practice at 7:30 p.m. today before scrimmaging Saturday.
