QB shuffle could deal in Garcia

Injured Beecher unsure of how roles will be assigned for Saturday

Steve Spurrier said earlier this week that both of his quarterbacks likely would play Saturday against Georgia. The question now is which two quarterbacks.

Redshirt freshman Stephen Garcia, who had been third on the depth chart, has been getting more snaps than Tommy Beecher in practice.

“Chris (Smelley) and Garcia have been getting most of the work,” Beecher said after Wednesday’s practice.

Asked if that meant he was third string, Beecher said, “I have no idea.”

Beecher, who started the opener against N.C. State, said his left shoulder still is bothering him, but he would play if needed.

If Spurrier has decided on a starter, he has yet to make it public. He said all three quarterbacks were practicing, and when asked about Garcia, he said the much-hyped player was getting “a bunch” of reps in practice.

“He’s still sort of lost at times, still doesn’t know where everybody’s going,” Spurrier said. “But he’s making a little bit of improvement here and there.”

Smelley, who started Saturday at Vanderbilt, was coy when asked about the situation.

“I don’t know how to answer that,” he said, before making reference to practices being closed to the media.

“I think there’s a reason why y’all aren’t out here on the field. So that’s all I’m gonna say.”
