Mark Smith's stint as the strength coach for the Tennessee football team is over, and the Volunteers are paying him to leave.
Smith, who was the strength coach at USC for four years before departing for the Volunteers in December, will be paid his two-year agreement worth a total of nearly $400,000, according to the Knoxville (Tenn.) News-Sentinel.
Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton told the News-Sentinel that UT will pay Smith the two years of compensation owed according to his memorandum of understanding for separation without cause.
“We’ll pay that over the remaining time, mitigated by any new job he should undertake,” Hamilton told the newspaper.
New coach Lane Kiffin, who hired Smith, began the process of ousting him in May.
If Smith had resigned, he would not be owed anything financially by the university.
Craig Fitzgerald replaced Smith as the Gamecocks' strength coach.
