USC walk-on pleads, pays fine

Parking official wants Davis to pay for medical bills after downtown run-in

A USC football player has paid a traffic fine following a downtown accident in April that sent a Columbia parking enforcement official to the hospital with a knee injury.

Eric Davis, a walk-on punter from Newberry, paid a $236 fine and pleaded guilty last week to failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk after hitting 48-year-old Steven Hartwig as he crossed Assembly Street near the Carolina Coliseum on April 8.

Hartwig told police Davis drove off after rolling through a stop sign on Devine Street while turning on to Assembly Street and striking Hartwig on the right knee with the bumper of his two-door Infiniti coupe.

Hartwig said the impact caused him to roll on to hood of Davis’ car, which Hartwig identified three days later when he spotted it in the Williams-Brice Stadium parking lot while attending the spring game.

Davis said Sunday he came to a complete stop before he “brushed” Hartwig with the side of his car. Davis said Hartwig did not land on his hood. After the two exchanged words, Davis said he left because it appeared Hartwig was OK.

Hartwig, who underwent arthroscopic knee surgery this month as a result of the accident, said he wants Davis to help pay his medical bills.

Davis, a redshirt freshman, entered spring drills as the backup to Spencer Lanning.
