USC tied for 24th after NCAA first round

TOLEDO, Ohio — South Carolina is tied for 24th place after the first round of the NCAA men’s golf championships on Tuesday at Inverness Golf Club.

USC shot a team score of 306, 18 shots behind the leaders. Mark Silvers II is the Gamecocks’ top individual golfer after a 4-over 75 left him a tie for 55th.

Clemson’s Kyle Stanley is tied for 16th with a 1-over 72 in the first round. Stanley was 2-over making the turn, then finished his round birdie-bogey-birdie.

Northwestern’s Jonathan Bowers, Illinois’ Scott Langley and North Carolina State’s Matt Hill shot 2-under-par 69s to lead the individual race, while Oklahoma State and Georgia shared the team lead.
