USC in seventh after one round at Lady Tar Heel

At Chapel Hill, N.C., Benedicte Toumpsin shot an even-par 72 on the opening day of the Lady Tar Heel Invitational to help the Gamecocks to seventh place after 18 holes of play. USC is five shots out of second place heading into today's second round.

Freshman Meredith Swanson is only one shot behind Toumpsin after an opening-round 1-over 73.

Individually, Michigan State's Laura Kueny shot a 3-under 69 to take a one-shot lead over Duke's Courtney Ellenbogen, Louisville's Sara-Maude Juneau and Florida State's Hannah Thomson.

SWIMMING AND DIVING

Gamecocks earn split with Kentucky in season opener

The USC men's swimming and diving team defeated an SEC opponent for the first time in three years as they downed Kentucky 160-140 at the Carolina Natatorium. The USC women's team fell 168-130.

Bobby Cave, a native of London, won both his events in his first collegiate competition. He took first place in the 100-yard breaststroke and also led a 1-2 finish in the 200 breast.

For the USC women, junior twins Claire and Christine Thompson swept the top spots in the mid-distance and distance events. Claire took first in the 200, 500 and 1,000 with Christine second in all three events. Junior Megan Sparks got a win in the 200-yard backstroke.

South Carolina drops in straight sets at LSU

At Baton Rouge, La., USC (10-7, 2-6 SEC) dropped its fourth-consecutive match, as LSU (12-4, 6-1) took a 25-12, 25-16, 25-23 victory against the Gamecocks at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

Senior Sarah Cline topped the Gamecocks defensively, making a match-high 15 digs. Cline has now recorded double-digit digs in every match this season.
