USC's 13th commitment speaks on decision

Phil Kornblut

Defensive back Jimmy Legree (6-0, 170) of Beaufort committed to USC Thursday night, becoming the 13th pledge for the Gamecocks' 2009 class.

"I'm excited, really," Legree said Friday afternoon. "I'm ready to step into my new role and do my part.

"It's local and all my family is in South Carolina and they can see me play. I like the coaching staff. I'll play cornerback. I'm good at going up and getting the ball. If it's in the air, I fee like it's mine and I'm going to go get it."

He had been favoring the Gamecocks since they offered after camp in June.

Legree also had an offer from Vanderbilt and drew interest from Clemson, N.C. State and Wake Forest.

Legree plays cornerback and safety. Last season he had 70 tackles and six interceptions.
