NEWS OF THE DAY

Jarriel King arrives, has new position

More than 3½ years after he originally signed with the Gamecocks, lineman Jarriel King made it to campus. When the 6-foot-7, 285-pound transfer from Georgia Military College showed up, he had a new position: offensive tackle.

It will be interesting to see how King, known for his defensive prowess at junior college, takes to offense. Coaches will have to wait a few days to find out: King will not be able to participate much until he has a physical next week.

Stock rising

Senior cornerback Carlos got off to a good start with two interceptions in 7-on-7 drills and played with youthful enthusiasm.

Stock falling

It’s hard to say anyone’s stock is falling after one practice in shorts and helmets. But USC coach Steve Spurrier said second-year receivers Joe Hills and Matt Clements need to have good camps.

Injury report

Freshman safety Jay Spearman and freshman linebacker Reggie Bowens were sidelined with shoulder injuries.

Quote of the day

“He looked pretty good. I wasn’t out there watching his every move. I was focusing on what I was doing. But he looked all right,” — Chris Smelley on fellow quarterback Stephen Garcia, back at practice following a four-month suspension.

Up next

The Gamecocks will work out at 7:30 p.m. today at the Bluff Road practice fields. The practice is open to the public.
