News of the day
The era of good feelings was back, a day after coach Steve Spurrier angrily cut practice short. Eric Norwood said he was sorry for his Monday hit on Moe Brown, whose bruised hip healed enough for him to return. None of the isolated shoving matches caused Spurrier to worry.
“We practiced like a team. We got a lot out of it,” Spurrier said. “We had a little bumping around and so forth. It was a pretty good practice.”
Stock rising
Defensive end Clifton Geathers was singled out by Spurrier for batting passes down at the line. Geathers entered the preseason on the second team, but he is attempting to see even more action than he did as a freshman.
Stock falling
Receivers not named Kenny McKinley. Projected No. 2 Dion LeCorn dropped a Stephen Garcia pass; freshman C.C. Whitlock was out with what Spurrier called “academic woes.” Spurrier said the players have a long way to go.
Injury report
Starting cornerback Captain Munnerlyn limped off late in practice, but it didn’t look serious. Tight end Jared Cook (toe) probably will not be back until next week. Defensive tackles Ladi Ajiboye (broken right hand) and Melvin Ingram (foot) are still out.
Quote of the day
“I did it without coach even having to say it. It was just something that I knew was wrong.” — Eric Norwood on whether he apologized for his actions Monday.
Up next
Tonight at Williams-Brice Stadium, the Gamecocks will hold their first scrimmage. It will feature mainly young players although the first three quarterbacks will play. Spurrier said the team will practice for an hour, starting at 7:30 p.m., before heading over.
