In November, it will be Barack Obama vs. John McCain. For the next two Thursday nights, it will be Obama and McCain vs. the Gamecocks.
For each of the next two weeks, the two major presidential candidates will give speeches at the same time as South Carolina football games. Tonight, Obama accepts the Democratic nomination on all the major networks and news channels while USC hosts N.C. State on ESPN.
Next week, McCain’s speech at the Republican convention goes opposite USC-Vanderbilt.
USC athletics director Eric Hyman happens to be in the middle of reading Obama’s book “The Audacity of Hope.” But Hyman’s attention will be on his team the next two weeks, and he thinks the Gamecocks will do well with other viewers too.
“It’s been talked about,” Hyman said of the viewing matchup. “College football has held it own.”
Torn viewers could tape or TiVo the speeches. There’s a better chance they could flip over during halftime next week to watch McCain’s speech because the USC-Vanderbilt game starts at 8:30 p.m., and McCain is expected to speak at 10 p.m.
Obama’s speech will probably be during the second half of tonight’s game.
