Sound Off: USC-Vanderbilt

Top five reasons the SEC should trade Vanderbilt to the ACC.

All about hoops, baby!

Vanderbilt’s primary interest always has been basketball, just like most schools in the ACC. Football is an afterthought, just like most schools in the ACC.

No jail time

You can’t compete in the SEC — OK, Vanderbilt usually doesn’t — in football without going on probation every five to 10 years. Vandy has never faced NCAA probation.

ACC-like venue

Vanderbilt plays in 39,773-seat Vanderbilt Stadium. That is a perfect fit for the ACC, where stadium sizes generally hang around the 50,000 mark. The size of the stadium is a reflection of the interest in the program.

Duke needs company, part 1

It gets lonely being at the bottom of the ACC where Duke has suffered through 13 consecutive losing seasons and has nine league wins in that period. Vandy could provide company in the basement, having been through 25 consecutive losing seasons with only 12 SEC wins the past 12 seasons.

Duke needs company, part 2

Vanderbilt’s academics really are not a good fit in the SEC. Hey, schools such as Vanderbilt, as well as ACC buddies Duke and Wake Forest, do not need fancy new academic enrichment centers for student-athletes. They all have libraries.
