Garcia will start against LSU

Well, turns out we only had to wait a few minutes to find out next week’s starting quarterback. It will be Stephen Garcia, USC coach Steve Spurrier announced after the game.

It will be the first start of Garcia’s career.

“I’m looking forward to starting. I’ve been waiting awhile for it,” Garcia said. “My time’s come, so hopefully I just make the most of it.”

Smelley had not been told by Spurrier of the move.

“He stepped in and played well today. Congrats to him,” Smelley said of Garcia. “But I don’t have anybody to blame but me.”

A few other quick notes:

- Ryan Succop, who missed a career-high four field goals, said his abdominal strain wasn’t to blame. But special teams coach Ray Rychleski didn’t agree, and said he should have started Spencer Lanning at place-kicker because Succop didn’t practice until Thursday.

- Spurrier said the formation on the final touchdown - Weslye Saunders lined up where the right tackle would, but was eligible - was used by LSU in the BCS championship win over Ohio State. The Gamecocks first practiced it in the preseason, but felt today was the right time to use it.
