SEC honors Garcia and Munnerlyn

USC quarterback Stephen Garcia and Gamecocks cornerback Captain Munnerlyn were selected as SEC players of the week for their performances in the 24-17 win at Kentucky.

Garcia, who came off the bench in the second half and led a pair of fourth-quarter scoring drives, was named the conference’s freshman of the week. The right-hander was 10-of-14 passing for a career-high 169 yards and a touchdown.

The redshirt freshman from Lutz, Fla., is scheduled to make his first career start Saturday against No. 13 LSU.

Munnerlyn, a junior from Mobile, Ala., earned the nod as the SEC’s special teams player of the week after returning a kickoff 84 yards to set up a touchdown and taking a blocked field goal back 81 yards for a touchdown.

This is the third consecutive week USC has had at least one player honored. Ryan Succop was the special teams player after making four field goals against Alabama-Birmingham, while quarterback Chris Smelley was the offensive player after passing for a career-high 327 yards and three touchdowns at Ole Miss.
