Grading the keys; injury report

Find the rhythm

Steve Spurrier was not kidding when he said he planned to play two quarterbacks: Chris Smelley and Stephen Garcia alternated nearly ever play. Neither was particularly sharp; Smelley was 9-of-19 passing for 148 yards and a touchdown, Garcia was 4-of-11 for 71 yards and a touchdown with one interception. But no one blamed the quarterback shuffle on the uneven performances.

Grade: C.

Unpack the sacks

Facing an Arkansas team that has given up more sacks than any team in the country except South Carolina and Hawaii, the Gamecocks matched last week’s sack total against Tennessee by sacking Casey Dick six times. Linebacker Eric Norwood led the way with a career-high three sacks. On the flip side, the Gamecocks allowed Smelley to be sacked twice.

Grade: B-plus.

Exorcise the demons

With Darren McFadden and Felix Jones gone to the NFL, few expected Arkansas to repeat its record-setting rushing performance from last season. The Gamecocks knocked Michael Smith out of the game when the SEC’s leading rusher aggravated a shoulder injury in the second half. While Brandon Barnett averaged 6.4 yards a carry filling in for Smith, Arkansas finished with 54 rushing yards — 488 fewer than last season.

Grade: A.

Injury report
