What to know about Iowa
Never count the Hawkeyes out of a bowl game. Iowa fans love to talk about the spectacular ending to Iowa’s 30-25 victory against LSU in the 2005 Capital One Bowl.
LSU scored with 46 seconds remaining to take a 25-24 lead. Only 4 seconds remained when Iowa lined up at its 44-yard line for one final play.
Amazingly enough, Iowa quarterback Drew Tate found receiver Warren Holloway open in the middle of the field. Holloway caught the ball at the LSU 17-yard line and raced untouched into the end zone for the winning score.
Observance of the Day
Tommy Bowden spoke at the Outback Bowl’s Fellowship of Christian Athlete’s breakfast Tuesday in Tampa.
Bowden said it was one of three FCA bowl game talks he will give. The former Clemson coach looked fit and said he has enjoyed his latest gig as an ESPN in-studio analyst.
Bowden declined to talk about Clemson and his mid-season departure from the program.
It’s the Outback Bowl, mate
OK, it has come down to this: let’s go to the head guy and get the skinny on Nicole Kidman’s appearance at Thursday’s Outback Bowl.
Jim McVay, president of the Outback Bowl, has been on pins and needles all week with the prospect of Kidman arriving in Tampa.
“For the record, I have not seen Nicole here yet,” McVay said. “Of course, I haven’t seen Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie, either.”
Outback Bowl history
The 2000 Outback Bowl featured quarterbacks Drew Brees of Purdue and Quincy Carter of Georgia. Both provided all kinds of fireworks.
Purdue bolted to a 25-0 lead before Georgia railed to tie the game at 25 at the end of regulation. After Purdue missed a field goal on its first possession of overtime, Georgia’s Hap Hines booted a 19-yarder for the win.
Brees was the game’s MVP after passing for 378 yards.
