First Quarter
Iowa 14 | USC 0
KEY MOMENT: Iowa establishes that it plays classic ball-hogging Big Ten football, stuffing Shonn Greene down the throat of USC’s defense for much of a 13-play, 64-yard touchdown drive to open the game.
THE MAN: Greene’s 25 yards on that first drive came on seven carries. Not a great average, but he definitely sets a tone: Check your chinstraps, Gamecocks.
TIME OF POSSESSION: Iowa 11:09, USC 3:51
Second quarter
Iowa 21 | USC 0
KEY MOMENT: The Gamecocks’ fifth drive of the half is notable because it is the first USC possession of the day that does not end on a Stephen Garcia turnover.
THE MAN: For better or worse, Garcia. Despite accounting for four turnovers to this point, he begins to spread the ball around and not fixate on Kenny McKinley. Jason Barnes’ three catches produce 26 yards.
TIME OF POSSESSION: Iowa 6:11, USC 8:49
Third quarter
Iowa 31 | USC 0
KEY MOMENT: A Ryan Succop sighting results in a 46-yard line drive field goal ... that is nullified by an illegal formation. Succop’s second attempt from 51 yards falls short.
THE MAN: Greene continues to pound USC’s defense, rushing for 44 yards including an 11-yard touchdown. Through three quarters, he has 121 yards on 28 carries.
TIME OF POSSESSION: Iowa 10:24, USC 4:36
Fourth quarter
Iowa 31 | USC 10
KEY MOMENT: After failing twice on fades to Kenny McKinley, Chris Smelley finds Jared Cook for a 10-yard touchdown that saves USC from a shutout.
THE MAN: Throwing virtually on every down, Smelley completes 11 of 22 passes for 134 yards and leads USC on a pair of scoring drives.
TIME OF POSSESSION: Iowa 8:10, USC 6:50
