Weekend produces few commitments

USC’S BIGGEST RECRUITING weekend of the month attracted 16 official visits but only two players not already committed: offensive lineman Quinton Washington of Timberland and athlete Travante Stallworth of Leesville, La. Neither committed during their visits.

Washington has been strong on USC for several months.

“I can’t say they’re No. 1, but they will be in my top group when I finish my visits,” Washington said. “I really do like it. It’s just a great place to be.”

Washington visited Clemson and plans to visit Tennessee and Miami the next two weekends.

Stallworth has been an Auburn commitment.

“I am still committed to Auburn, but they (USC) are up there in the mix,” Stallworth said. “My top three are Michigan, Auburn and South Carolina.”

USC assistant Steve Spurrier Jr. and Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez are scheduled to visit him Wednesday. USC coach Steve Spurrier will visit next week. He is scheduled to visit Auburn this weekend.

USC-bound defensive end Duane Chisolm of Beaufort did not make his official visit because of an issue related to his test score. While he said last week he remains committed to USC, Chisolm said he might contact Clemson about an official visit. He said he has not heard from the Tigers since he committed to USC.

Wide receiver Alshon Jeffrey of Calhoun County was scheduled to visit USC over the weekend, but he rescheduled for Jan. 31 because of a basketball conflict. He is scheduled to visit Tennessee this coming weekend.

Defensive back Darrell Givens of Indian Head, Md., was not able to work an official visit to USC over the weekend, so he has set a trip for Jan. 31. Givens is a Penn State commitment but wants to give USC a look.

Wide receiver Cameron Kenney of Garden City (Kan.) JC canceled his scheduled visit to USC for this past weekend and is down to Georgia and Auburn.

Defensive back Josh Hunter of Charlotte, who has been committed to North Carolina, also canceled his visit to USC and plans to stick with the Tar Heels.

Clemson had three official visits over the weekend: quarterback Tajh Boyd of Hampton, Va., wide receiver Kendall Kelly of Gadsden, Ala., and defensive back Cory Addison of Jacksonville, Fla., a USC commitment.

Boyd is down to Clemson, Oregon and Ohio State and could have a decision this week. Coaches from all three schools are scheduled to visit him this week.

“It’s wherever I think I will fit in most comfortable with the academics and the football,” he said after his Clemson visit. “I feel I can go anywhere and play.”

Kelly also has visited Alabama and is scheduled to visit LSU this weekend. He said he liked everything about his Clemson visit, and the Tigers moved up with him.

Addison has been a USC commitment since the summer but has decided to check out other places. He visited USC in December and is scheduled to visit Illinois this weekend and Vanderbilt on Jan. 31.

Running back Mike Gillislee of Deland, Fla., had scheduled a visit to Clemson for this past weekend but canceled last week after firming up his commitment to Florida.

USC and Clemson missed on defensive back Jonathan Scott of Daytona Beach, Fla., when he announced a commitment to West Virginia at his high school banquet Sunday night.

USC missed on running back Lindsey Lamar of Tampa, Fla., last week when he committed to South Florida.

Clemson has been working Stanford-bound wide receiver Jamal Patterson of McDonough, Ga. But his coach said last week Patterson was firm with the Cardinal after taking his official visit.

USC target wide receiver Lamar Scruggs of Jacksonville made his official visit to Mississippi over the weekend. He also has been to South Florida. He is scheduled to visit USC this coming weekend and Illinois the following weekend. Miami tried to get involved, according to his coach, but Scruggs was not interested.

“His mom says it’s his decision as long as he goes to South Carolina,” coach Joe Reynolds said.

Clemson-bound Quandon Christian of Lake View made an official visit to N.C. State over the weekend, and while he said he’s still committed to Clemson, he did not shoot down the idea of changing to the Wolfpack. N.C. State coach Tom O’Brien will make his in-home visit Tuesday.

Defensive back Justin Green of Louisville, Ky., who made a recent official visit to Clemson, said last week he will stick to his commitment to Ohio State. He also visited Kentucky and had planned to visit Alabama and Illinois.

Offensive lineman Jerquari Schofield of South Aiken has visited Clemson and will visit Tennessee this weekend. He is a soft commitment to the Vols and is giving Clemson strong consideration. Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney is scheduled for his in-home visit Thursday.

USC recruiter Shane Beamer talked last week with Shrine Bowl quarterback Donny McElveen II of Summerville about walking on.

“He said he doesn’t think they will take a (scholarship) quarterback in the class,” McElveen said, adding Beamer plans to get back in touch regarding an official visit.

Clemson already has talked to McElveen about walking on and he has a visit scheduled there Jan. 31st. He favors the Tigers.

Defensive lineman Kwame Geathers of Carvers Bay took an official visit to Georgia over the weekend and is scheduled to visit Central Florida on Jan. 31. He was scheduled to visit North Carolina on Jan. 10 but did not make the trip. USC showed interest early, but Geathers said he’s not hearing much from the Gamecocks now. Tennessee has started to show interest, and he also is looking at Maryland.

Ware Shoals defensive back Lance Richardson was scheduled to visit Georgia Tech over the weekend. He has an offer from the Yellow Jackets, and Pittsburgh also has shown interest.

Some official visits scheduled this past weekend included linebacker Devin Wherry of South Pointe to S.C. State, running back Rockarious King of Timberland to S.C. State, offensive lineman Malcolm Boyd of Dorman to Liberty, and defensive end Sam Montgomery of Greenwood to North Carolina.

Wherry is scheduled to visit Presbyterian this weekend. King is scheduled to visit Coastal Carolina and Newberry the next two weekends. Boyd is scheduled to visit Appalachian State and Georgia Southern the next two weekends. He also has been contacted by Michigan State.

Clemson running back target Tim Simon of Cordova, Ala., was scheduled to visit Ole Miss over the weekend. He has been committed to Ole Miss, but Clemson moved up after his official visit there. “I’d say it’s 50-50 right now,” he said last week. He is scheduled to visit Kentucky and Tennessee the next two weekends.

Clemson-bound linebacker Eric Fields of Warner Robins, Ga., has not yet taken the ACT or SAT and thus cannot make an official visit because he doesn’t have a test score on his transcript. He is scheduled to take the test Feb. 7. Fields said he still feels committed to Clemson.

Dreher defensive back Ardamian Player (5-10, 170) has committed to Newberry while Blue Devil linebacker Jabril Williams (6-3, 210) has offers from Newberry and Livingstone.
