An agent who represents several former USC football players paid $60,000 to settle a state investigation into claims he operated in South Carolina without a license.
David Canter, whose client list includes ex-Gamecock receiver Troy Williamson, also must report to the S.C. Department of Consumer Affairs every month for the next two years outlining his dealings with athletes in the state, according to documents obtained by The State this week through a Freedom of Information Act request.
“The case has been resolved,” Canter said Thursday. “I didn’t do anything wrong. I’m licensed in the state and I look forward to hopefully signing some great players in South Carolina.”
Canter received his two-year certification in January, four months after paying the settlement. Joe McCulloch, Canter’s attorney, said the $60,000 was to reimburse the Consumer Affairs office for investigative costs.
“There are certainly things that (Canter) could have done better that would have eliminated the need for any of this,” McCulloch said.
Canter, based in south Florida, also represents ex-USC players Rod Wilson and Lance Laury, and retired NFL tailback Stephen Davis.
Canter could have faced fines of $100,000 for each violation of the South Carolina law that requires agents to register with the state before they solicit or sign athletes, Department of Consumer Affairs attorney Carri Grube Lybarker said.
Lybarker said South Carolina is one of 37 states with the uniform athlete-agent law.
