EUGENE, Ore. — Former South Carolina track star Lashinda Demus won the 400-meter hurdles at the U.S. track and field championships on Saturday while in the men’s 110 hurdles, former USC star Terrence Trammell lost by 0.003 of a second at Hayward Field.
Demus won the championship with a time of 53.78 seconds, more than a half-second ahead of Sheena Tosta. Another former USC star, Tiffany Williams, was third in 55.18.
The world’s top-ranked 400 hurdler in 2006, Demus in 2008 attempted an unusual comeback from maternity, having given birth to twin boys in June 2007. At the Olympic Trials in Eugene last summer., she had the lead for most of the race but faded to fourth in the homestretch.
In the men’s 110 hurdles, David Payne edged Trammell for the win. Both were officially clocked in 13.12 seconds, but Payne’s final time was 13.115 to Trammell’s 13.118. USC’s Jason Richardson was fifth.
Clemson graduate Shawn Crawford was the top qualifier for the semifinals of the 200. Crawford won his heat in 20.19 seconds. In the first heat of the 200, USC’s Antonio Salas was fourth in 20.80 and did not advance.
One other USC athlete, Johnny Dutch, competed Saturday. Dutch won his heat in the 400 hurdles semifinals in 49.24.
