USC athletics finished 39th in the final Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings for 2008-09, up nine spots from their 48th-place finish during the 2007-08 season.
The Directors’ Cup is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, Learfield Sports and USA Today to the best collegiate athletics programs in the country.
Stanford won its 15th consecutive title, scoring 1,455 points.
South Carolina tallied 560.75 points during the course of the year. The Gamecocks received 73.5 points from men’s outdoor track & field, 73 points from women’s tennis, 60.75 points from women’s indoor track and field, 58.5 points from men’s golf, 53.5 points from men’s indoor track and field, 50 points from baseball, 44.5 points from men’s swimming and diving, 39 points from women’s golf, 33 points from women’s outdoor track and field, and 25 points each from football, women’s soccer and men’s tennis.
The Gamecocks have finished in the top 40 in the country in the final standings 11 times in the past 13 years.
Schools are able to count points from 20 intercollegiate sports, 10 on the men’s side and 10 on the women’s side.
The Gamecocks’ best finishes came in 2001-02 when they were 11th and 2002-03 when they were 18th.
USC finished ninth among SEC schools.
Clemson placed 53rd with a total of 397 points. The Tigers finished 10th among ACC schools.
