Byrnes’ Lattimore keeps 2 of 5 alive

BYRNES RUNNING BACK Marcus Lattimore (6-foot, 210 pounds) decided on three of his final five schools.

Lattimore says Oregon, Penn State and North Carolina will be in his final five. That leaves USC, Clemson, Auburn, Alabama, Florida State and Maryland from Lattimore’s hoping to land in his final two spots. And Lattimore said only one of the in-state schools will make the cut. Lattimore was at USC’s camp Saturday, and he made an unofficial visit to Clemson earlier in the week.

USC’s final prospect camp of the summer produced one commitment in defensive back Cadarious Sanders (6-0, 185) of LaGrange, Ga. The Gamecocks view Sanders as a cornerback. He also had offers from Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt. He is the 16th commitment for USC’s 2010 class.

Manning defensive back John Fulton (6-0, 180) told TheBigSpur.com that USC is his favorite. Fulton had been favoring Alabama much of the summer. He also likes Georgia and Florida.

Clemson’s commitment count for 2010 reached nine with a pledge from offensive lineman Kalon Davis (6-5, 335) of Chester. Davis had been favoring the Tigers and took an unofficial visit Friday to make the commitment in person to Dabo Swinney and staff. Davis also had offers from Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, NC State, Mississippi State, South Florida, Wisconsin, Penn State, Kentucky and East Carolina.

Other players around the state made commitments:

Athlete Jerrell Priester (5-8, 180) of Allendale-Fairfax committed to Vanderbilt.

Byrnes quarterback Chas Dodd (6-1, 190) committed to Rutgers.

Offensive lineman Taylor Hudson (6-5, 290) of Mauldin committed to East Carolina.

Defensive lineman Ego Ferguson Jr. (6-3, 260) of Hargrave Prep, Va., made an unofficial visit to USC last week and talked to coaches and viewed the facilities. “I wanted to see the school and the relationship with the coaches and meet the defensive line coach,” Ferguson said.

USC is one of 21 schools Ferguson is considering. Clemson is also on the list along with Nebraska, Oklahoma, LSU, Penn State, Southern Cal, Florida State, Miami, Notre Dame, Tennessee, North Carolina and Georgia. He plans to trim his list by the end of the summer. Ferguson left Columbia and went to Florida to visit the Gators, Florida State, Miami and South Florida over the weekend.

Joining Ferguson on his visit to USC was offensive lineman Arie Kouandjio (6-6, 314) of Hyattsville, Md. “I got to meet all the coaches and I had a really good time,” he said. “They showed me a bunch about the school.”

Some of Kouandjio’s 40 offers are Tennessee, Miami, LSU, Vanderbilt, North Carolina, Penn State, Auburn, Florida, Nebraska and Alabama.

Also visiting USC last week was tight end Trey Millard (6-3, 250) of Columbia, Mo. He also visited Vanderbilt and Tennessee. He will visit Oklahoma early next month. Millard’s top four is Oklahoma, Iowa, Tennessee and Syracuse.

USC is in the final two with Darius Kilgo (6-4, 305) of Charlotte, along with Tennessee. He has offers from Illinois, Maryland, East Carolina, Minnesota and Michigan State. Kilgo attended USC’s lineman camp earlier in the summer and will visit Tennessee.

Byrnes wide receiver Torian Richardson (6-1, 180) visited Rutgers and was scheduled to be at a Mississippi State camp last week. He has offers from Mississippi State, Michigan State, Rutgers, Louisville, East Carolina, Syracuse, Tulane and Kansas State. Richardson also camped at USC, and the Gamecocks remain interested.

Defensive back Tony Grimes (6-0, 175) is considering USC among his 23 offers. He was scheduled to be at Florida’s camp Friday night. He camped at Miami and Alabama and visited Michigan.

Wide receiver Markeith Ambles (6-3, 185) of McDonough, Ga., cut his list to 16 and Clemson and USC are in the hunt. He has visited UCLA and Cal and plans to visit Alabama and Florida.

Blythewood defensive lineman Curtis Hill (6-2, 270) has offers from Wisconsin and Georgia Southern according to his coach, and he is drawing interest from USC, Auburn, Michigan and Notre Dame Hill’s father played at USC.

Central defensive end Keegan Funderburk (6-4, 262) was offered by Wisconsin. Michigan State also has made him a written offer, according to his coach. Funderburk was at USC’s camp Saturday. The Gamecocks and Clemson remain interested but they want to see him improve academically before offering, according to his coach.

Defensive lineman Sharrif Floyd (6-3, 311) of Philadelphia made an appearance at USC’s camp Saturday. He came to Columbia after visiting several schools in Florida. It was Floyd’s second visit to USC, and the Gamecocks appear to be in strong shape for an official visit from him in the fall.

Offensive lineman Jack DeBoef (6-8, 270) of State College, Pa., was scheduled to be at USC’s camp Saturday after attending Florida’s camp Friday. DeBoef is considering the Gamecocks along with Purdue, Buffalo, North Carolina, N.C. State, Illinois and others.

Tight end Greg Reese (6-6, 230) planned to be at USC on Saturday in hopes of impressing the Gamecocks enough to land an offer. Reese has not been heavily recruited but performed well in a recent camp in New Jersey, and that has stirred interest in him.

Defensive lineman Michael Thornton (6-2, 280) of Stone Mountain, Ga., plans to visit Clemson, Tennessee and Florida before this summer. He has offers from USC, Auburn, Miami, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Arkansas, Penn State and West Virginia. He visited Georgia, Georgia Tech, Alabama and Auburn earlier in the summer. He wants to visit USC but is not sure when he can do so.

Linebacker Tyrone Cornelius (6-2, 198) of Stone Mountain, Ga., has a top five of USC, Miami, Georgia Tech, Auburn and Tennessee. USC was the first to offer him.

“They’re showing me a lot of love,” Cornelius said of the Gamecocks. He has visited USC three times.

Defensive back Sharrod Golightly (5-11, 175) of Decatur, Ga., is a Vanderbilt commitment but was scheduled to be at USC’s camp Saturday. He calls his Vandy commitment a soft one and will visit Ole Miss next month. He also has offers from Tennessee, UAB and New Mexico.

Running back Demont Buice (6-2, 220) of Gadsden, Ala., remains a strong lean to Clemson and said late last week he is very close to a commitment. He was hoping to visit last week but could not arrange transportation. He has offers from Kentucky, Louisville, UAB and Southern Miss.

Running back Ricardo Allen (5-10, 176), wide receiver O.J. Ross (5-10 ,176) and wide receiver Dominique Roberts (6-0, 203) of Daytona Beach, Fla., plan to visit USC later in the week. Allen and Ross are teammates, while Roberts plays for a rival school. The trio also will visit Wake Forest and North Carolina. Allen and Ross hold USC offers, while Roberts is drawing interest from the Gamecocks. USC and Wake Forest are the top two with Allen right now. Ross has a top five of USC, North Carolina, Rutgers, West Virginia and Purdue.

Clemson has offered defensive back Martin Jenkins (5-9, 165) of Roswell, Ga., and he favors the Tigers. Jenkins told CUTigers.com a commitment could come very soon. Jenkins has offers from Syracuse, Middle Tennessee and Toledo. He attended Florida’s camp Friday. Jenkins father played at Tennessee and in the NFL.

USC has been in touch with athlete Dionte Ponder (5-10, 166) of Ocala, Fla., L but has not offered. He has offers from Duke, Central Florida, Cincinnati, Indiana, Iowa and Vanderbilt.

Byrnes defensive lineman Brandon Willis (6-4, 250) visited Cal last week and plans to take official visits there and to UCLA.

Clemson has added punter Matt Lincoff as a transfer from Dean College in Franklin, Mass., and he will compete for the job this fall as a walk-on. Lincoff played cornerback and punted in high school.

Tight end Kevin Haplea (6-4, 241) of Allandale, N.J., has a USC offer but is down to North Carolina, Penn State, Florida State, West Virginia and Pitt. He plans to announce Monday.

Basketball. Clemson is in the picture with 6-5 Jason Morris of Augusta, who attends school in Connecticut. According to his father, Morris has offers from Clemson, Georgia Tech, Virginia and Georgia. He is getting interest from Stanford, Georgetown and Villanova.

Clemson is also going after 6-6 Casey Prather of Jackson, Tenn. Some of his offers are North Carolina, Alabama, Virginia, Michigan, Florida, Vanderbilt, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Arkansas and Memphis. He has visited Clemson, Vanderbilt, Alabama, Georgia and Virginia.

USC women picked up a commitment for 2011 from 6-4 Elem Ibiam of Griffin, Ga. She is regarded as one of the top prospects in the country in her class.

College of Charleston coach Bobby Cremins announced his 2009 class last week. Cremins signed 6-6 Willis Hall of Charlotte, 6-9 Rashad Wright of Kent, Conn., and 6-1 Andrew Lawrence of London.

USC Upstate signed 6-7 Ricardo Glenn of Augusta.
