USC practice report: Eckerson reps at right tackle
News of the day There was a minor bit of juggling on the offensive line. Hutch Eckerson, thought to be the leader to start the opener at left tackle, got reps at right tackle on Tuesday night. That means redshirt freshman Quintin Richardson and sophomore newcomer Jarriel King have an increased chance of starting the season at left tackle.
Stock rising
Jared Cook. As well as sophomore Weslye Saunders has done, the Gamecocks need both tight ends to be effective. So Cook’s return this week from a broken toe was a welcome sight.
Stock falling
Practice peace. The Gamecocks had another spirited practice, cutting it short to do running. But Spurrier didn’t seem too concerned: “Every now and then it happens. One guy shoves, and another guy shoves, and then they take up for each other. But no fisticuffs or anything like that. Just too much jawing and shoving.”
Injury report
King pulled his hamstring in a drill, but Spurrier hopes to have him for tonight’s scrimmage. … Quarterback Stephen Garcia (sprained ankle) wore a yellow jersey and took snaps after practice. … Defensive tackle Marque Hall is out a few days after having fluid from his left knee drained.
Quote of the day
“Like a natural. Just like he would have at defensive end.” - Defensive line coach Brad Lawing, on King, who was a candidate to play defense.
Up next
Barring bad weather, the Gamecocks are scheduled to hold a scrimmage tonight at 8 p.m. It will be open to the public, and Spurrier said young players will get much of the action.
