Spurrier moving on after embarrassing loss
Gamecocks off before Clemson finale
Joseph PersonUSC coach Steve Spurrier said he was embarrassed by the 56-6 loss to Florida, the worst of his career. But Spurrier does not plan to dwell on the defeat as the Gamecocks enter an open date prior to their Nov. 29 clash with Clemson.
"We’re not the first team they’ve ever scored 50 on lately and may not be the last team. But we are 7-4," Spurrier said Sunday during his day-after teleconference. "We’re not very happy. We’re embarrassed by our play, our coaching and all that (Saturday) night. But we’ve got to file it, regroup and really try to play our best against Clemson."
After alternating Chris Smelley and Stephen Garcia at quarterback the past two games, Spurrier said there's a chance he might go with one of them against Clemson. He did not elaborate, saying he would make an announcement later.
On the injury front, the Gamecocks have three defensive backs who are dinged up: cornerbacks Carlos Thomas (sprained knee) and Captain Munnerlyn (toe) and safety Akeem Auguste (hamstring), who did not play vs. Florida. Spurrier thinks all three should be OK for the Clemson game.
Florida's loss dropped the Gamecocks out of both the Associated Press and USA Today coaches polls.
