USC women's hoops overview

Coach: Dawn Staley (172-80 in eight seasons overall, first season at USC)

2007-08: 16-16, 4-10 SEC, WNIT second round

Strength: The Gamecocks will rely on Demetress Adams in the post and Brionna Dickerson on the perimeter until youngsters Lakeisha Sutton, Miranda Tate and Sada Wheeler acclimate themselves. Both Adams and Dickerson are capable of scoring 20 points a game.

Weakness: Point guard play likely will be a concern. Entering the season, it looked like freshman Sutton and sophomores Samone Kennedy and Lauren Falohun would rotate at the position. All three have little experience and will be under the watchful eye of arguably the best women’s point guard of all-time in Staley.

Fun Fact: The Gamecocks will be led by two players who played high school ball less than 100 miles from Columbia: Adams starred at Lee Central, while Dickerson played in the shadow of Colonial Life Arena at Heathwood Hall.

Outlook: Everything depends on how well the team adapts to Staley’s style in her first season. There is talent — yet some of it is unproven — to build around. But USC can ill-afford to lose one of its three senior leaders — Adams, Dickerson and forward C.J. Pace — for an extended period. Another WNIT berth is possible, but playing in the rough and tumble SEC, an NCAA tournament trip is probably a reach.
