Dickerson season, career at USC ends early

Brionna Dickerson’s USC career is over.

After beginning a rehabilitation program on her injured right knee in the hopes of playing again this season, Dickerson decided against returning after consulting with her family and team physician Jeff Guy, USC announced Monday.

Dickerson is expected to have surgery.

Dickerson, a senior from Columbia, injured her right knee Jan. 25 against Vanderbilt — one game after setting a career high with 31 points at Mississippi. The former Heathwood Hall star was having her best season, averaging a team-leading 13.4 points per game and 18.2 points in SEC games.

“This has been a difficult process for Brionna and her family with her playing future up in the air these last few weeks,” USC coach Dawn Staley said in a release. “We have missed her on the court, but she has been upbeat and supportive of her teammates throughout her rehab, and I know she will continue to bring her positive energy to the program for the rest of the season.”

Dickerson is the second senior to sustain a season-ending knee injury: Forward Demetress Adams recently underwent ACL surgery Feb. 4 after she was hurt Jan. 22 at Mississippi.

“I am proud of my teammates and how they responded to both Demetress and me getting hurt,” Dickerson said in the release. “It has been an important time for them to learn about themselves and about coach (Dawn) Staley. It will help them even more next year.”

The Gamecocks (10-14, 2-9 SEC) snapped a five-game losing streak Sunday with a 68-57 victory against Alabama. USC’s next game is Sunday at Florida.
