CHARLOTTE — Twenty minutes before Sam Montgomery announced on ESPNU on Wednesday that he was heading to LSU, he wasn’t certain where he was headed.

As he waited to appear in the studio, he stared at his telephone looking for a text message from fellow recruit Trent Richardson, the top-rated Florida running back who was trying to decide between Alabama and LSU. The Under Armour All-Americans hoped to play together, and Montgomery was seriously considering a last-minute switch if Richardson decided on Alabama.

The Greenwood High defensive end stuck with the Tigers, however, even though Richardson had yet to make his decision. Montgomery chose LSU over UNC and Tennessee.

He had decided he was headed out of state, although he spoke highly of the USC and Clemson staffs.

“I think that’s better for me,” Montgomery said. “I want to conquer a new venue and go out and see the world.”

He chose LSU for the opportunity to win an SEC and a national championship.

“I thought about what I wanted to do, and the SEC is where the competition is at,” he said. “That’s the best league going. LSU was what I liked best. Tennessee and USC both have tremendous programs, but I did what was best for me.”
